What is Sustainability?

This has turned out to be one of the most difficult questions ever posed. In theory it should be a simple answer – living in a way that allows us to continue into the future. In reality however, sustainability is incomprehensibly complex. Is it about people? Yes. Is it about nature and biodiversity? You bet.

Student Spotlight: SolDrop – A Social Sustainability Project

With an idea that began in a Bucky Fuller course about systems thinking, taught by Curt McNamara as part of MCAD’s Sustainable Design program, it sparked into what became the focus of my Master’s thesis project – the SolDrop solar still concept. SolDrop is an affordable, sustainable, adaptable, and scalable water purification solution designed for

Alumni Update: Pushing Production to the Front of the Line

In today’s graphic design process, sustainability is born of the creative minds of the art directors and designers, early in the concept phase. But the top-down management model of today’s graphic design studio, branding firm, or ad agency is not always compatible with the demands of sustainable design. To change this without jeopardizing jobs, the

Random Acts of Beauty

What is it about the reoccurring patterns and palettes that randomly occur in nature that make them inherently appealing? I can’t imagine not being enthralled by the rhythmic pattern of sand caressed by waves or even by the inviting waves as they crash and dissipate along a shoreline. Planting Seeds for Minds, Hearts and Hands

During my spring 2012 semester in the Master of Arts in Sustainable Design program at MCAD, I had the opportunity to deepen my engagement in social media through a practicum with Joshua Foss from Metro Hippie. Josh is an adjunct faculty member of MCAD’s MA in Sustainable Design and teaches the Introduction to Sustainable Design

Ethics-Based Marketing

Like causing ripples in a pond, a great marketing effort (or even just a good one), will take-on a positive life and energy of its own. An ill-conceived effort though will sink like a rock, causing barely a splash. What is ethics-based marketing? Ethics-based Marketing put simply  — is telling an honest story. It’s also
