If you’re reading this, you’ve no doubt heard of biomimicry, innovation inspired by nature. You may also know that the promise of biomimicry is “resilient design for a climate impacted world”.  If not, you’ll enjoy the short film “The Promise of Biomimicry”, created by The Biomimicry Institute and Tree Media.

MCAD’s MA in Sustainable Design program believes in the promise of biomimicry. 

In addition to our program being an Education Partner of The Biomimicry Institute, we have faculty who are Fellows of the Biomimicry Institute, and our Director is on their Advisory Council. 

We also integrate biomimicry throughout our program. In addition to our course Biomimetic Design, we teach biomimicry as a sustainable design framework, a systems thinking approach, and a tool for collaborative product design. Because we believe in the promise of biomimicry, we also provide our students with the holistic knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to put it to good use.

If you’re not in the program (yet!) we offer a 4-week course called Introduction to Biomimicry: A Sustainable Design Methodology through MCAD’s Continuing Education, taught by the former and current Director of the program (and both former Directors with The Biomimicry Institute), and TA’ed by two program alumni.

Denise DeLuca / Former Director

Denise DeLuca is the Director of MCAD’s Sustainable Design program. She was co-founder of BCI: Biomimicry Creative for Innovation, a network of creative professional change agents driving ecological thinking for radical transformation. Denise is author of the book Re-Aligning with Nature: Ecological Thinking for Radical Transformation, which was illustrated by MASD alum Stephanie Koehler. She also teaches with the Amani Institute.

Denise’s previous roles include Education Director for the International Living Future Institute, Project Manager for Swedish Biomimetics 3000, and Outreach Director for The Biomimicry Institute. Denise is a licensed civil engineer (PE) and holds a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering with a focus on modeling landscape-scale surface and groundwater interactions.  In addition, Denise is a Biomimicry Fellow and a member of the Advisory Council of The Biomimicry Institute,  Board Member of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP), on the editorial board of the Journal of Bionic Engineering, and an Expert with Katerva. Denise is based in Oregon.
